The Eagle is a film adaptation of the 1954 historical adventure novel The Eagle of the Ninth by Rosemary Sutcliff. Directed by Kevin Macdonald from a script by Jeremy Brock, the film is set in the 2nd century AD and tells of a young Roman officer's search to discover the truth about the disappearance of his father's legion in the north of Britain. The story is based on the legend of the Legio IX Hispana (Ninth Spanish Legion) which is alleged to have disappeared in Britain in around AD 117.
The film stars Channing Tatum, Jamie Bell, Donald Sutherland, Mark Strong and Tahar Rahim. Filming began on 24 August 2009 and took place in Hungary and Scotland. The film is a United Kingdom and United States co-production.

In 140 AD, a young Roman centurion attempts to uncover the truth about the disappearance of his father's legion—the Ninth—in the north of Britain 20 years previously. The centurion, Marcus Aquila (Tatum), travels with a British slave, Esca (Bell), beyond Hadrian's Wall into Caledonia (now known as Scotland) where he must confront the Pictish tribes to recover the legion's eagle standard and restore his father's reputation. Eventually its revealed that all but a small amount of deserters were killed in an ambush by the tribes and Esca knew the truth the whole time as his tribe was one of the ones that attacked the Ninth.
The two are found by the Seal People, the most vicious of the tribes and Esca claims that Marcus is his slave and apparently betrays him in order to get his freedom. Eventually Esca reveals its a ploy to infiltrate the tribe and the two sucessfully retrieve the eagle which is in the possesion of the Seal People. The two flee, chased by the Seal People, but due to a wound Marcus has acting up, they run into trouble. Marcus tries to stay behind and have Esca finish the mission, but Esca refuses to abandon his friend, even after Marcus grants him his freedom. Esca heads out to look for horses and returns with the survivors of the Ninth who return to help protect the eagle and put themselves under Marcus' command, Marcus, Esca and the Ninth succesfully protect the eagle and defeat the Seal People, although many of the Ninth fall and Marcus returns the eagle to Rome. There, his family's honor is restored and there is talk of reforming the Ninth under his command. The movie ends with Marcus and Esca wondering what they'll do next and Marcus leaving it up to Esca.
