How To Avoid Spies On BitTorrent

How To Avoid Spies On BitTorrent : courtsey FREAKBITS

Most anti-piracy outfits and other organizations that track BitTorrent users rely on information they obtain from BitTorrent trackers. This is an easy and convenient technique to gather info, but also one that can be circumvented.

Let’s assume you want to download ‘Steal This Film’ without being spied on by third parties that monitor the download. Impossible? Not really…

Pretty much all BitTorrent clients allow users to remove the trackers from a torrent before downloading. In uTorrent you can do so by clicking the advanced button in the torrent opening dialog box. You’ll then see the trackers included in the torrent plus some other info.

From Mininova Torrentz .Fan's Guide
How To Avoid Spies On BitTorrent

If you want to go trackerless you’ll have to delete the trackers and make sure that the DHT, Peer Exchange and Local Peer Discovery boxes (see screenshot) are checked otherwise you you won’t be able to download at all.

That’s it…

We have to note that it’s by no means impossible to track people who download without a tracker. It’s just harder to do so and thus far we haven’t seen evidence that DHT tracking is being used.

For those who want a little more security, anonymous BitTorrent is a good option!!

Peer exchange

Peer exchange or PEX is a communications protocol that augments the BitTorrent file sharing protocol. It allows a group of users (or peers) that are collaborating to share a given file to do so more swiftly and efficiently.
Peer Xchange
In the original design of the BitTorrent file sharing protocol, peers (users) in a file sharing group (known as a "swarm") relied upon a central computer server called a tracker to find each other and to maintain the swarm. PEX greatly reduces the reliance of peers on a tracker by allowing each peer to directly update others in the swarm as to which peers are currently in the swarm. By reducing dependency on a centralized tracker, PEX increases the speed, efficiency, and robustness of the BitTorrent protocol.

What are µTorrent's system requirements?

First question which comes to every bittorent user is what are minimum system requirement of uTorrent software. Answer is:-

Very low. It works on as weak a system as Windows 95 on a 486 with 14MiB of RAM (with the Winsock2 update), up to 2003 and Vista. It also works on 64-bit Windows.

It's reported to work under Linux using Cedega with some issues (blue bars in Pieces and Files tab don't work, update function fails, minimize has a slight bug) if you use "Win98" mode.

It works very well under Wine 0.9.16 (especially with µTorrent 1.6), but versions previous to 0.9.15 might have issues or not work at all. There are some minor bugs.

It will also work under FreeBSD 6.1 using Wine 0.9.16+, but requires the GLX module to be enabled in xorg.conf.

It will NOT work in Darwine 0.9.12 on OSX. It is reported to work, however, in CrossOver Office alpha 2 and 3, though you can't minimize for more than a few seconds without it freezing.

All 9x systems should have at least IE 4.0 installed: it upgrades a system DLL that provides functionality for various µTorrent functions. However, it is not necessary for µTorrent to run. Without it, only the toolbar, graphs in the pieces view, and double clicks in the list view no longer function.

From Mininova Torrentz .Fan's Guide

Be warned that Windows 95/98 are limited to 100 max concurrent connections, unless you apply the following registry tweak (sourced from Windows TCP/IP Registry Entries):

1. Open the registry editor (Start -> Run -> regedit), go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\MSTCP
2.

You must create the following entry, it is not present by default.

MaxConnections
Data Type: String

Specifies the maximum number of concurrent connections. The default is 100. The maximum is 512.

Find more active trackers for torrrents

Earlier I had posted about free trackers for to increase torrent download speed. Today I came across a site which will help you to download torrents which have stuck at say 90% or 35%. Also you will find this site helpful to download old torrents whose tracker is down or there are no seeds.

"btReAnnounceR" will come to your help in such unenviable position. This site will help you if :-
* You need to find more trackers for your torrents.
* The tracker to a much desired download may be blocked by your ISP and you need to find an alternate.
* Your torrent wont complete because the primary tracker is down.
* You want to try to find more seeds for your torrent.

From Mininova .Fan's Guide

How to use "btReAnnounceR" ?

Firstly downloaded the .torrent file from any top torrent site like Torrentz, Mininova, BTjunkie, etc onto my PC and then upload it to btReAnnouncer. Within a few seconds the site displayed the current primary tracker. However, it will also display a list of other tracker URLs which are tracking the same torrent. Please note anyone or combination of these trackers can help you to complete a stopped download.

At this stage it is possible to select a new primary tracker for the torrent by ticking the checkbox and pushing the ‘ReAnnounce’ button. Then check any of the other trackers in the list to be used as an alternative and click ‘ReAnnounce’ again. To finish up and start downloading the .torrent, download it by clicking on the hyperlinked text underneath ‘Download ReAnnounced Torrent…’ and import it into utorrent or any other best torrent program for mac, not forgetting to point it at your previously incomplete download.

DHT in uTorrent | Enable / Disable it ?

In Utorrent there is an option of enabling or disabling DHT. Seen it? Now What is DHT and how does it affects download speed and other things while downloading torrent.

DHT stands for “Distributed Hash Table”. Technically, DHTs characteristically emphasize the following properties:

* Decentralization: the nodes collectively form the system without any central coordination.
* Scalability: the system should function efficiently even with thousands or millions of nodes.
* Fault tolerance: the system should be reliable (in some sense) even with nodes continuously joining, leaving, and failing.

u-torrent DHT
How it affects torrents Download ?

DHT layers “decentralize” torrents what make them more stable and less reliant on the web based trackers. If a web based tracker goes down, the torrents stay alive because peers can act as “nodes” keeping the swarm intact.
What this means is that your client will be able to find peers even when the tracker is down, or doesn't even exist anymore. It allows the swarm to continue as normal without a tracker.

What is a tracker in Torrents?

A BitTorrent tracker is a service on the internet that assists in the communication between BitTorrent clients. When you open a torrent file, your machine contacts the tracker and asks for a list of seeds and leechers to connect to.

A Bit Torrent tracker centrally coordinates the P2P transfer of files among users.
Tracker software serves up torrent files for download from a Web site. The tracker maintains information about all BitTorrent clients utilizing each torrent. Specifically, the tracker identifies the network location of each client either uploading or downloading the P2P file associated with a torrent. It also tracks which fragment(s) of that file each client possesses, to assist in efficient data sharing between clients.

Create and upload torrent file

Well lets see how to create a torrent and then upload it using Utorrent, bitcomet and Azureus.

Torrents are the best way to share files. It works on peer to peer file sharing protocol. A torrent is actually a small file with extension .torrent which contains information about the tracker and where the file is located. To download a torrent file you need a torrent client like utorrent, bittorrent.

Please note I got this information from http://torrentfreak.com/

So how do you make torrent? Well it’s very simple. Open your favorite BitTorrent client and do the magic trick:

file > create torrent

That’s all? Well almost. All you need to do now is put in the tracker info and tick some boxes. This can differ somewhat from client to client but it all comes down to the same thing.

Utorrent.
utorrent bit torrent

1. File > Create new Torrent (or CTRL + N)
2. Select the files and or directories

3. Trackers: This is probably the hard part for most people. But it’s pretty easy, just put in one of the popular public trackers. You can use one or more trackers, but in general one is enough.

Here are some good trackers you can use:

http://open.tracker.thepiratebay.org/announce
http://www.torrent-downloads.to:2710/announce
http://denis.stalker.h3q.com:6969/announce
udp://denis.stalker.h3q.com:6969/announce
http://www.sumotracker.com/announce

Put one of these in the tracker box

4. Do NOT tick the private torrent box (unless you’re using a private tracker)

5. Save the torrent and send it to your friends

Bitcomet

bitcomet bit torrent

1. File > Create Torrent (or CTRL + M)

2. Select the files and or directories

3. Select “enable public DHT network” from the dropdown box
This way you can be your own tracker if the public tracker goes down.

4. Tracker server and DHT node list
Again, This is probably the hard part for most people. But it’s pretty easy, just put in one of the popular public trackers. You can use one or more trackers, but in general one is enough.

Here are some of the most popular trackers at the moment:

http://open.tracker.thepiratebay.org/announce

http://denis.stalker.h3q.com:6969/announce
udp://denis.stalker.h3q.com:6969/announce
http://www.sumotracker.com/announce

Put one of these in the tracker box

5. Save the torrent and send it to your friends

Azureus

azureus bit torrent

1. File > New Torrent (or CTRL + N)

2. Tick “use an external tracker”.
And again, This is probably the hard part for most people. But it’s pretty easy, just put in one of the popular public trackers.

Here are some of the most popular trackers at the moment:

http://tracker.prq.to/announce
http://inferno.demonoid.com:3389/announce
http://tracker.bt-chat.com/announce
http://tracker.zerotracker.com:2710/announce

Put one of these in the tracker box

3. Select single file or dicectory, click NEXT and point to the file or directory you want to share, and click NEXT

4. Do NOT tick “private torrent”

5. Do tick “allow decentralized tracking”

6. Save the torrent and send it to your friends

Warning: uploading copyright-protected material might be prohibited by law in some countries. Sites do not take any responsibility for your submission.

Torrent, Peer, Seed, Leech, Tracker :BitTorrent Terminology

BitTorrent Terminology

What is Torrent ?
A torrent can mean either a .torrent metadata file or all files described by it, depending on context. The torrent file contains metadata about all the files it makes downloadable, including their names and sizes and checksums of all pieces in the torrent. It also contains the address of a tracker that coordinates communication between the peers in the swarm. Torrents can be downloaded from any of the top torrent sites.

What is swarm?
Together, all users sharing a torrent are called a swarm. Six peers and two seeds make a swarm of eight.

What is peer in torrents?
A peer is one instance of a BitTorrent client running on a computer on the Internet that you connect to and transfer data. Usually a peer does not have the complete file, but only parts of it, however, 'peer' can be used to refer to any participant in the swarm (in this case, also known as a 'client').

What is Seed is torrentz?
A seed is a peer that has a complete copy of the torrent and still offers it for upload. The more seeds there are, the better the chances are for completion of the file.

What is Leech is torrentz?
A leech is usually a peer who has a negative effect on the swarm by having a very poor share ratio - in other words, downloading much more than they upload. Most leeches are users on asynchronous internet connections who do not leave their BitTorrent client open to seed the file after their download has completed. However, some leeches intentionally hurt the swarm to avoid uploading by using modified clients or excessively limiting their upload speed.
The term leech is also incorrectly used to refer to what should properly be called a peer, a member of the swarm who has not yet downloaded the complete file.

Who is Tracker?
A tracker is a server that keeps track of which seeds and peers are in the swarm. Clients report information to the tracker periodically and in exchange receive information about other clients that they can connect to. The tracker is not directly involved in the data transfer and does not have a copy of the file.

What is meant by availability of torrent ?
(also distributed copies) The number of full copies of the file available to the client. Each seed adds 1.0 to this number, as they have one complete copy of the file. A connected peer with a fraction of the file available adds that fraction to the availability (ie. a peer with 65.3% of the file downloaded increases the availability by 0.653).

What is meant by interested in torrent terms?
Describes a downloader who wishes to obtain pieces of a file the client has. For example, the uploading client would flag a downloading client as 'interested' if that client did not possess a piece that it did, and wished to obtain it.

From Mininova Fan's Guide.

Who is choked uploader in torrents?
Describes an uploader to whom the client does not wish to upload. An uploading client 'chokes' another client in several situations:

* The second client is a seed, in which case it does not want any pieces (ie. it is completely uninterested)
* The uploading client is already uploading at its full capacity (ie. the value for max_uploads has been reached)

Snubbed
An uploading client is flagged as snubbed if the downloading client has not received any data from it in over 60 seconds.

What is Mininova? Best Bittorrent Source

Mininova is one of the largest BitTorrent index sites. Mininova is the largest torrent search engine and directory on the net. We started in January 2005 as an alternative to the (at that time very popular) SuprNova, which went offline at the end of 2004 due to legal issues.
Our goal is to provide an easy-to-use directory and search engine for all kinds of torrent files. Visitors of Mininova can anonymously upload torrents to this website, tracked by any BitTorrent tracker. Scrape data (amount of seeds/leechers) is collected a few times a day.
Note that we try to keep Mininova family-safe, so adult submissions are not allowed.
